The Overview

Diseases Prevention And Infectious Disease Program

Nearly half of the world and Ugandan population is at risk of malaria. The disease kills over 400,000 people each year, with children under five representing most of those deaths’ Pregnant women, people living with HIV, mobile populations, and travelers are also high-risk groups.

Challenges

Most malaria cases and deaths occur in sub- Saharan Africa and in Uganda.  Malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Uganda. It accounts for a 46%% of total OPD attendances. Interventions such as bed net distribution and indoor spraying of insecticides to kill or block the mosquitoes that transmit malaria, along with improved diagnostic testing and effective treatment, have resulted in decline in malaria deaths since 2010.  However, progress is threatened by drug and insecticide resistance, higher prices for newer, more effective tools, and continued dependency on donor funding.

Solution

Our disease prevention and management program encompass critical themes of Malaria and other infectious diseases. Our interventions are designed to empower communities and individuals with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to lead healthier lives and effectively address health challenges. Our program takes a proactive stance in addressing malaria prevention, control and reduction. We implement up-to-date evidence-based prevention and treatment interventions for Malaria and other infectious diseases following the burden.

Community Centered Innovation, Research and Development

PICSA Uganda use human-centered design principles to mobilize communities and families for healthier behaviors and care-seeking practices. Central to our behavior change approach, we engage men as clients, partners and fathers in child health and development. Across districts, sub counties and parishes and programs, we link women and families to platforms such as Women Empowered savings and lending groups as a way for women to generate the income, they need to care for themselves and their families and as a space for women to discuss and address group-driven social issues that impact the well-being of their families and communities.
